The National Remembrance Day
In the Netherlands, the annual National Remembrance Day takes place on 4 May. It commemorates all civilians and soldiers of the Kingdom of the Netherlands who have died anywhere in the world since the outbreak of the Second World War (one assumes 10 May 1940) in war situations and in peacekeeping operations. Until 1961, the commemoration only concerned the Dutch victims of the Second World War. From 1961 onwards, the fallen during other military conflicts (such as the police actions in the Dutch East Indies) and peace operations (such as in e.g. Lebanon, Bosnia, Iran and Afghanistan) are also commemorated on 4 May.
