John was born in the second quarter of 1920 in Upton. He was the son of James Appleby (12 December 1890 – fourth quarter of 1976) and Dorothy Annie Jones. His parents were married in the third quarter of 1915.
John had five brothers and one sister. The family consisted of the following children:
Arthur James (1916)
Norman Charles (1919)
John Edgar (1920)
Thomas William (1921)
Wilfred George (1924)
Dorothy Irene (1928)
Stanley Frederick (1937–2019)
Brother Thomas William served as a Leading Telegraphist on the Royal Navy HM Submarine Usurper. He also died during the war, on 12 October 1943.
Brother Stanley Frederick married Della A. Birch in 1976. They had a son, Andrew, and a daughter, Gill Appleby. I received the following information from her:
Thank you for the information, it’s really interesting. I’ll share it with my brother as I’m sure he’d like to take a look. I’ll also see if we have any pictures. Jack (John) was one of 7 children – 5 brothers went to war – 3 in the army and 2 in the Navy. Unfortunately Jack and Tom didn’t come home. I think my grandparents may have visited his grave sometime after the war. I know my grandmother always appreciated how well cared for the graves were.
